Gmail Is Killing POP and Gmailify Access. Here's What It Means for You

WIRED

Gmail Is Killing POP and Gmailify Access. If you have multiple email accounts, your Gmail setup may soon need some reorganizing. Google giveth, and Google taketh away. Two long-standing features are being removed from Gmail, and they both relate to how you access messages from other, non-Google email accounts through the Gmail interface. The features we're talking about are Gmailify and POP access, and if you rely on them to consolidate multiple email accounts into your Gmail inbox, you're going to have to find a different approach.

Conservatives mock Biden wandering away from question on Chinese hackers: 'Has no idea what's going on'

FOX News

President Biden held a conference about artificial intelligence, but left as he was asked about a technological attack from China-based hackers. President Biden shuffled away from a question about Chinese hackers after remarks on AI at the White House, sparking laughter across Twitter. After quipping, "I'm the AI," and warning, "If any of you think I'm Abe Lincoln, blame it on the AI," Biden spoke about the future of artificial intelligence, noting that it "promises an enormous, enormous promise of both risk to our society and our economy and our national security, but also incredible opportunities." Among his calls for action, he demanded companies working with AI ensure they are "rooting out bias and discrimination." President, can you tell us about the hacking of cabinet officials by China and the threshold of concern you have about that, sir?" Biden ignored the question and asked his staff, "Ready?

5 ways 'deepfakes' could infiltrate healthcare

#artificialintelligence

Deepfakes, an emerging form of manipulated photo and video content, could be the next frontier that businesses have to tackle in cybersecurity. Deepfakes recently have been the subject of entertainment news, such as viral videos of a fake Tom Cruise or a newly trending app that transforms user's photos into lip-syncing videos, but more sophisticated versions could one day pose national security threats, according to experts. The term "deepfakes" is a combination of "deep learning"--a type of artificial intelligence--and "fakes," describing how video and images can be altered with AI to create believable fabrications. The FBI last month warned that attackers "almost certainly" will leverage synthetic content, such as deepfakes, for cyber- and foreign influence attacks in the next 12 to 18 months. There haven't been documented cases of malicious use of deepfakes in healthcare to date, and many of the most popular deepfakes--such as the viral Tom Cruise videos--took weeks of work to create and still have glitches that tip off a close watcher.

DoNotPay's 'robo lawyer' now scans your emails to fight spammers, cancel subs, and get refunds

#artificialintelligence

DoNotPay, a bot-based platform that helps consumers fight for their rights, is rolling out a new email service that automatically applies for refunds, cancels subscriptions, fights spam, and more by scanning messages in people's inboxes. The launch comes in a year in which the San Francisco-based company has seen a surge in demand due to the global pandemic, with consumers contending with canceled flights, closed gyms, and monthly memberships to reconsider due to reduced income. As the world transitions to the "new normal" post-lockdown, many consumers will still be feeling the pinch, putting DoNotPay in a strong position to apply its "robo lawyer" to more industries and use-cases. The company recently secured $12 million in funding to help it do just that, with backing from big-name investors including Coatue Management, Andreessen Horowitz, and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. DoNotPay first came to prominence back in 2015 when British entrepreneur Josh Browder launched a website to help Londoners appeal parking fines.

Machine learning for cybersecurity: only as effective as your implementation

#artificialintelligence

We recently launched Elastic Security, combining the threat hunting and analytics tools from Elastic SIEM with the prevention and response features of Elastic Endpoint Security. This combined solution focuses on detecting and flexibly responding to security threats, with machine learning providing core capabilities for real-time protections, detections, and interactive hunting. But why are machine learning tools so important in information security? How is machine learning being applied? In this first of a two-part blog series, we'll motivate the "why" and explore the "how," highlighting malware prevention via supervised machine learning in Elastic Endpoint Security.

Artificial Intelligence And The Scam Industry

#artificialintelligence

As the internet weaves its tentacles more and more into the lives and homes of people around the world and artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more mainstream, does this put more and more people at risk at the hands of the international scamming organizations? In the past few weeks, a number of scams have been reported involving both small and large sums of money. In one, a Canadian retiree purchased a California condo. He had his bank wire a deposit to the sellers California bank account and waited for instructions on paying the outstanding balance of $820,000 Cdn. An email supposedly from the realtor handling the sale advised the balance should be wired to a different bank than the one the seller paid the deposit to.

AI wordsmith too dangerous to be released… has been released

#artificialintelligence

A text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm whose creators initially deemed too dangerous to release – given its ability to churn out fake news, spam and misinformation after feasting on a mere headline – has been unleashed. So far, so good, says the research lab, OpenAI. In a blog post last week, the lab said that the researchers have seen "no strong evidence of misuse" of the machine-learning language model, which is called GPT-2… at least, not yet. While we've seen some discussion around GPT-2's potential to augment high-volume/low-yield operations like spam and phishing, we haven't seen evidence of writing code, documentation, or instances of misuse […] We acknowledge that we cannot be aware of all threats, and that motivated actors can replicate language models without model release. Exactly how convincing is the output?

Researchers develop machine learning-based detector that stops lateral phishing attacks - Help Net Security

#artificialintelligence

Lateral phishing attacks – scams targeting users from compromised email accounts within an organization – are becoming an increasing concern in the U.S. Whereas in the past attackers would send phishing scams from email accounts external to an organization, recently there's been an explosion of email-borne scams in which an attackers compromise email accounts within organizations, and then uses those accounts to launch internal phishing emails to fellow employees – the kind of attacks known as lateral phishing. And when a phishing email comes from an internal account, the vast majority of email security systems can't stop it. Existing security systems largely detect cyber attacks that come from the outside, relying on signals like IP and domain reputation, which are ineffective when the email comes from an internal source. Lateral phishing attacks are also costly. FBI data shows that these cyberattacks caused more than $12 billion in losses between 2013-2018.

Outsmarting Email Hackers Using AI and Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

Email hacking is a commonly used malicious tactic in our increasingly connected world. Cybercriminals compromise email accounts to enter the IT premises of an organization and carry out attacks ranging from fraud and spying to information and identity theft. Without effective security measures to stop email hacks, potential victims can suffer serious consequences. The cyberespionage group Fancy Bear, which specializes in politically motivated attacks, has reportedly targeted the reelection campaign of a U.S. senator earlier this year via credential phishing tactics. Fancy Bear has been garnering headlines since 2015 for targeting political organizations in the U.S., Ukraine, France, Germany, Montenegro, and Turkey.
